When to Conduct Assessment Tool Validation

The purpose of validating assessment tools is to ensure that all aspects, performance criteria, and performance and knowledge evidence are included by your assessment tools. Therefore, whenever you get new educational resources, you must perform validation of assessment tools before students use them. There's no need to wait for your next scheduled validation. Validate new resources immediately to ensure they are suitable for student use.

- Additional Resources: These may include checklists, registers, and templates developed separately from the student workbook and marking guide. Validate these to ensure they match the assessment activity and meet unit requirements.

Validation Panel

Regulation 1.11 specifies the requirements for members of the validation panel. It states validation can be performed by one or more people. However, RTOs usually ask all trainers and evaluators to participate, sometimes including field experts.

Collectively, your panel must have:

- Vocational Competencies and Current Industry Skills relevant to the validated unit.
- Current Knowledge and Skills in Vocational Training.
- Either of the following certifications for training and assessment:
- TAE40116 Training and Assessment Certificate IV or its successor.

Principles of Assessment

- Fairness: Is the assessment process fair and equitable for all candidates?

Having students complete the tasks listed twice on just one baby does not fulfill the requirement.

All or Not Competent

Pay attention to lists. As mentioned earlier, if students perform only half the tasks listed, it’s non-compliant. Each assessment task must cover all requirements, or the student is not yet competent, and the assessment method is not compliant.

Can You Be More Specific?

Each assessment task must have clear and specific standard answers to guide the evaluator’s decision on the student’s competence. Therefore, it’s crucial that your guidelines do not confuse students or trainers.

Not using double-barrelled questions makes it more straightforward for students to respond and for evaluators to accurately assess student competence.
